Santorini

Santorini was fking beautiful. But we all know that. I get the feeling that the few ppl who read this have read Jess and Ems' posts about Santorini so I won't go into detail.

Fave things:
  • Walking to Oia was magical. Lovely. Just lovely.
  • There was this one really strong streetlight between our place and the city and it was so bright and fantastic. I wish I took a photo in its light.
  • Nice and loving drunks are the absolute best.
  • The first meal we had was at this lovely home-like restaurant and when I ordered the fish of the day the guy said I'd love it and damn it I did. He also claimed to have the best Sangria on the island and he did lol
  • We rode quadbikes to the top of the hill and the views going up were breath-taking.
  • The sun set in seconds. And every time, the sky went pastel pink.
  • We went to red beach and bought food from a vendor at the entrance and I just love still beach water and I floated blissfully so and the peaches were so juicy and it was nice. It was just nice.
  • The water was so damn blue surrounding Santorini. And it's not like a lovely aqua or green blue or turquoise or sky blue, it was magnificent and dark and royal.
 Negatives:
  • I was still a bit sick and I coughed up some phlegm in a bar and I didn't know where to spit it because we were inside and I didn't want to go all the way to the bathroom to spit it out but I also didn't want to leave it anywhere for someone to accidentally put their hand on ew so I spat it into an ash tray and all the ash flew back up at my face and that's the story of how I got ash in my eyes.
  • I learnt how to say faggot in greek under that very same beautiful street light. It bummed me out.
  • I didn't have sex!!! I can't say I had sex in every city of my trip and the worst part is that I almost did if only I remembered to reply to his DAMN messages lmao
  • The boat was fun but not exactly worth the money I spent on it, for me personally.

Athens

Athens was confusing. It was nice, definitely but it was really weirdly eye opening. Nobody really tells you what it’s like to tour Europe as a non-white gay. I’ve not touched any other country than Greece so I guess I shouldn’t be using the word Europe right now lol. But anyways, when you think of touring Europe, you think of eating all these different cuisines and exploring culture and then getting down in the night but I couldn’t help but think, in this first leg of this trip, that’s it’s probably way better being white and experiencing these things. I don’t really have a basis for this argument. But it’s just something you feel when you’re not white, especially when you’re in such a white place. Or it’s just paranoia. Who knows?

The weirdest revelation for me was that Greeks were definitely white. I was always so unsure. This confusion probably stemmed from Jeff and Josh. So, with Jeff (my usual), I initially did think he was white. When he described himself before our first meeting, he said he was kinda olive, like a Greek guy. One day, however, he was complaining about a neighbour and he used the phrase “white people!”, like in that ‘white people, am I right???’ kinda way, and I was so confused!!!! In my head I was like, but you!!! You’re white!!!!! And then my mind made this odd link between what he said about having somewhat olive skin and me thinking Greek people weren’t white. (Eventually, I said something about him not being white and he was so confused hahahaha He’s like a tru blue White Aussie and his expression was like, me? Not white? Are you blind?) ANYWAYS, the second thing is Josh and his constant emphasis on his Greek blood added to his opinions on coloured people being disadvantaged in film. For those who don’t know Josh, he’s this guy at my school known for his keen interest in Greek cinema. He’s half Greek and half Chilean. The thing is though, as much as he exuberates (probs not using this in the right context lol) his Greekness, he says next to nothing about his Chilean roots, really, but he’s still quite intense about being coloured and the adversities. And I think this too confused my brain into thinking that Greek people weren’t white hahahha I’m such a dumb-dumb. ANYFUCKINGWAYS, Europe felt really isolating in some ways. It probably had to do with the fact that I know no Greek. But also, I had this weird feeling that every time someone looked at me, it was as if they were looking at an alien, but one that was beneath them. However, this could just be how they look at tourists. But tbh, I firmly believe that things would be very different if I were a white tourist. Greece was just so residentially white that they could tell by our skin colour that we didn't belong.

The second eye opener that came with Greece was that it was a poor country. Or is it just Athens? I should do my research. I only read a single line on a website that said Greece is a poor country and that’s all I have to back this paragraph up. Anyways, I had these odd experiences where I found that when poor people and poor children came to ask for Euros, we would say no, but if I was in Vietnam, I would have definitely given them money. I discussed this with Jess, however, and it probably has a lot to with of course, the fact that we’re Vietnamese but also the fact that small amount of AUD is a lot to a Viet child and Europe’s just plain and simple a lot more expensive than Vietnam. But still, it was a strange thought. And a European country/popular tourist destination being poor was something I never thought was a thing?

Speaking of, Greece looked and felt a lot like Vietnam.

Anyways, enough of that, let’s get to the gays.

All the gays here are so much bigger than those in Aus. However, the weirdest thing is that a lot of the buff guys here are bottoms. It sucks because what about me. Where are all my tops?

Okay, anyways, let’s just talk about the trip in a more general sense? Idk.

So the first few days felt p odd. Ems said to me exactly how I felt. She said that it didn’t feel like I was in Europe, in a continent on the other side of the world, but I definitely knew I was not at home. I feel like the biggest factor of this was that in the restaurants we went to, the waiters all knew how to speak English and so that was a bit confuzzling xD Eventually, the place began to feel more and more and more unfamiliar in a worrying but also whimsical kind of way.

Arriving in Greece was magical. Maybe it was the abrupt change in season, but it felt like the country was covered in a beautiful golden light (the sun?? idk) that made everything glow in a way you’d never seen before. It’s like the sun hit all the colours of every building just right. I turned to Ems and said it was like there was filter over the entire country.

The first meal was great and my fave of the trip, actually. Our taxi driver from the airport said he liked just eating fish and vegetables when Jess asked him what he specifically liked to eat in Greece (which I guess is a bit odd to ask a guy who’s probably lived there their whole life and whose favourite food would’ve probably been something their mother made). Ever since he answered fish, I knew I wanted to get exactly that because if there was something I really wanted out of Greece, it was good seafood. I had a sea bass with this fantastic, delicious lemon olive oil sauce yummmmmmmmmm FK. We had a Greek salad as an entrĂ©e too and the tomatoes were so dang big and so dang FRESH.

Greek food can be so dense tho. I gained so much in five days. It’s nice but you just gotta take a break from so much meat (and Greek salads too, really).

Apart from food, Athens was what you’d expect. Filled with ancient history. I went to the Acropolis, which was nice, despite the snaps from people who made it seem like it was v disappointing and kind of just a long walk up a hill. I also went to a museum, which was cool. I wanted to see these gigantic white sculptures tbh but I think I was in the wrong place lol but the statues there were really magnificent (and super old).

Clubs in Athens close for the summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wtf????? Apparently they move to the coasts and islands during summer though so there’s hope of messy times in Santorini.

Oh, we went to a beach which was great because the water was nice and I fkn missed summer so much. I missed the tans and ofc the beach and freaking summer nights. The best part was that there were no mosquitoes too! I fkn love summer nights.

Okay, bye. Next stop, Santorini.

Europe + Internship

I bought tickets to Europe the other week and it was exhilarating. It was pretty impulsive but I've always wanted to go to Germany. I've always wanted to go but I was always waiting for a period of time where I didn't have uni work and I had money. Last year, all these people went to Japan and I was so jeals!! I've been really wanting to travel ASAP since. I really wanted to go during this mid year break (Aus' winter, every other countries glorious summer/spring) but AFTRS allocated this break to work placement so it was never really an option before. I was just gonna wait til the end of the year (a bunch of my aftrs mates wanted to go to Beijing, we were gonna stay with Lou and her family and I was gonna go from there to Japan straight after (but I also wanted to meet Maria in Japan but she's like really bad at saving money)) but then certain things were realised. For some reason, I was under the impression that Jess and Emily were doing their eurotrip smackbang in the middle of Sem 2 so tagging along was just not gonna happen. However, I was wrong lol, they were actually traveling right in the break :0 So really, I would've only missed the first few days of sem 2. I also didn't have enough money for a whole Europe trip like theirs and I still don't. However, Jess told me that I could just jump in somewhere within their trip, and I could afford it! I also ALSO realised that they were airbnb'ing it everywhere, so I could stay with them and they were gonna spend a whole week in Germany! When Jess told me all this, it hit me so hard that I could so go to Europe and have so much fkn fun. So the next day I went to a flight centre and booked tickets. And I was like hm, I wonder if I have anything in July. I remembered Trinh's 21st and I was like fk lol bummer, it's her 21st and everything, I'm the worst. But then of course, I remembered that I had to do 70 hrs of work placement before my next sem started and I hadn't even found one yet, right after I booked my flights.

I was sorta panicking but also putting a lot of faith in the weird notion that everything just works out for me lol I mean, not everything does really but enough to keep me afloat lol. Anyways, so I approached this company called 3rdspace and it was odd, their website was like a lot of we love creativity and supporting and producing creative content! But a lot of their work was advertising videos so I was like ??? Anyways, so it turned out a lot of their jobs were companies looking to produce ads so I guess that's that. They invited me to be a producer's assistant on the first day of a three day shoot last friday and it was nice. There's a lot to say. Here it is lol:

  1. I was the producer's assistant and essentially, I had nothing to do. Gosh, how do I say all the things I wanna say nicely and succinctly. Fk.
  2. Okay, let's start with Jake Heath. He's a nice guy and also the person who was leading the internship at 3rdspace. When I first met him for the interview, he mentioned how he got his foot in the door through an ex-girlfriend's relative and my thought was how did this small, awkward man get a girlfriend. Working with him at the shoot however, changed my views of him. He's not bad looking, he's actually a v adorable white man lol He's also got a witty sense of humour that I particularly like about him. He's just plain adorable, guys, ADORABLE!!! I wanna keep him in my pocket!! He also gives me his credit card for coffee runs and now I have a weird sugar daddy image of him, whoops.
  3. Days have passed since I last wrote this lol I'm currently in the offices at my internship and naughtily blogging during work time ;) It's good. I'm currently supposed to be brainstorming so brb lol
  4. Anyways, it's actually really nice at the office. I get to edit which is super easy. At first I was stressed about it because their paid, professional editor was just gunning through videos and I was spending my whole day with one lol But then Jake was like dw, u saving her hours of work and I'm like okay, thanks daddy :3
  5. I've yet to meet the office dog. I really hope I get to meet the office dog.
  6. I never really wanted to work at a company that mainly did corporate work. However, the things they do are kinda nice. They do a lot of promotion for companies that are trying to do good things to look better. And yeah, 3rdspace is getting paid lots to do it but their clients are doing rad things. I'm currently brainstorming ideas for this one thing NRMA is doing where they're sending driving instructors and providing proper lessons to the Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander youth of Wagga Wagga. And the shoot at the O'Brien Lifehouse was an educational video for people who had just been diagnosed with cancer - it was about what to expect and what to do if things went wrong.
  7. A small thing about the shoot at the hospital was that at one point, I had to look for someone and that meant I had to go all around the hospital. The main spots we were shooting in was an empty floor that nobody was using, offices and essentially just places that were unused for the day. That meant that I didn't see a lot of patients, not really. And so when I had to look around for that guy, I ended up going too far into one of the stations and I saw a lot of people going through chemotherapy and honestly it was kinda scary. I shouldn't have been scared but it probably comes down to the fact that my own life doesn't really encounter a lot of death (thank goodness) and so just seeing these patients far into their treatment freaked me out a little and tbh, I never expected that kind of reaction from myself.
  8. I'm learning a lot on this internship too actually. During the first days which was the shoot, I was really just either observing or buying things like coffee. The thing about this internship is that I went for it because I was desperate to get my 70 hours done before Europe and so I went for anybody who would take me and I was ecstatic when Jake let me come onto 3rdspace. But, I also went in with an attitude of I'm just here to get my hours done and get out (which was pretty shitty of me in retrospect but also I was doing nothing on the shoot!!!). However, Jake really is trying his best to get me to learn. In further retrospect, he did what he could during the shoot. And he's new to this too, being in charge of an intern. On the last day, he told people to take me aside and talk about their roles which was nice. Most of them were too busy to but it was a great gesture. He's still doing it at the office which is nice too. However, I have to pay for my own coffee now :( Oh! The daddy recording the sound asked me if he had time to make a phone call before the next shoot and I did what a producer's assistant does best and told him that he'd be fine and he said thanks and winked at me, it was nice lol
  9. I am in love with the flute solo in Matt Corby's Sooth Lady Wine, fk fk fk.
  10. Elliott Brissenden is interning at 3rdspace now lol
  11. My excitement for Europe has died down drastically :( However, as soon as my internship is done and my tonsillitis has gone and fucked itself, I'm sure that the excitement that I had at the start of this post will come back.
  12. Thanks to Elliott, I've learnt that what I've been having this whole time is tonsillitis!! I just assumed these swollen lymph nodes were a cold or flu symptom so I'd always been drowning myself in OJ when I got it. I'm so mad, it keeps happening to me but appaz I can get my tonsils removed!!! Maybe I will one day.
  13. I'm v worried about my Europe funds btw.
  14. After today, I'll have surpassed my 70 hrs minimum :0
  15. I slept as soon as I got home because I was so fkn cold and feverish at the same time like wtf and I had a 12 hr nap. On the plus side, I didn't come into the office late for the 3rd time lol
  16. I've hit a stump with the Wagga Wagga brainstorm but Jake hasn't come back yet so now I'm just blogging lol I wonder if Elliott can see this sinning.
Okay so Athens I'm not particularly excited for. I mean, I do look forward to the history but at the same time, I could easily skip dis city. However, the beaches will be rad, I'm sure, and the history stuff will be far greater than I expect. Santorini I'm v v v v v excited for because have you seen the IG photos??? It's so beautiful, it's gonna be so fkn gr8888. Idk if this is in Athens or Santorini, but there's that one beach with the very clear water and gravel instead of sand that I really want to go to. I also just can't wait for good greek seafood, ooft. And then there's Budapest. I've no idea what to expect at all. All I know is that one song by George Ezra but I mean... lol.. However, I know that the accommodation is significantly cheaper in Budapest so maybe everything else will be cheap!! Tbh idk but here's hoping lol And after Hungary, there's Berlin!!! Idk what to expect. I remember mentioning to the flight attendant that I wanted to stay there an extra week and she was like ooft no don't do that. And I was like aw why? And she said that she didn't particularly like German food and I was like oh yeah me neither!!! But after I booked my flights, I remembered that I wanted to stay there that extra week so I can live in and explore Berlin on my own for 7 days. I could check out local art scenes and be a pretentious ding dong. It was gonna be g. But ofc, I got distracted by the food. However! I'm v excited for that top shit apple strudel, yes ma'am, mmm. I'm also excited to buy clothes for myself and for my friends!!! It's a good chance to buy birthday presents lol (Trinh and Michail). My flight allows me a second piece of luggage on the way home so I shant be stingey. I'll be a lil stingey doe because of fund problems mentioned above :( Anyways, I'm done with this post. Bye.
